Investigations on rumen and claw health of different wild ruminants related to subacute ruminal acidosis

چکیده

In this study four ruminant species of Nuremberg Zoo were evaluated for subacute ruminal acidosis according to the feeding management. Parameters of microbiological fermentation of the rumen as well as rumen tissue samples were examined. Additionally, investigations on claw health, in terms of laminitis were made. Three of the four species, all grassand roughage feeders, showed severe characteristics of subacute ruminal acidosis due to a diet high in fermentable carbohydrates and low in fibre. One species, classified as intermediate feeder, appeared to tolerate the diet with this high concentrate rate, since no pathological variations were present. These results demonstrated that subacute ruminal acidosis is still a serious problem in captive wild ruminants, which are often fed wrong diets with a high concentration of easily digestible carbohydrates. Investigations on rumen health of different wild ruminants in relation to feeding management

In this study, the rumen metabolism of four ruminant species – blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra), barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia), sika deer (Cervus nippon dybowskii) and addax antelope (Addax nasomaculatus) – from the Nuremberg Zoo was investigated in relation to their feeding management. Parameters of microbial fermentation in the rumen as well as rumen tissue samples were examined. Additiona...

Subacute ruminal acidosis: prevalence and risk factors in Greek dairy herds

Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) represents one of the most important metabolic subclinical disordersof high producing dairy cows, having serious impact in both animal health and herd profitability. The aim ofthis study was to confirm the presence of SARA in Greek dairy herds and record its prevalence and riskfactors. Ruminal fluid samples, via rumenocentesis, were obtained from a total of 153 ...

Rumen Acidosis in Small Ruminants and Its Therapeutic Management

Forty two small ruminants, 26 (61.90%) sheep and 16 (38.10%) goats were treated for rumen acidosis. 19 (45.24%), 12 (28.57%), 6 (14.29%) and 5 (11.90%) animals had eaten apple, cooked rice (wazwan left over) turnip and chapatti respectively and manifested clinical form of ruminal acidosis with, 2.86%; (n=18) as mild (Rumen fluid pH=6.32 ±0.09316), 38.09%;(n=16)moderate (Rumen fluid pH=5.71 ±0.0...

Why are dairy cows not able to cope with the subacute ruminal acidosis?

One of the largest challenges for the dairy industry is to provide cows with a diet which is highly energetic but does not negatively affect their rumens' functions. In highly productive dairy cows, feeding diets rich in readily fermentable carbohydrates provides energy precursors needed for maximum milk production, but simultaneously decreases ruminal pH, leading to a widespread prevalence of ...

Ruminant Nutrition Symposium: Role of fermentation acid absorption in the regulation of ruminal pH.

Highly fermentable diets are rapidly converted to organic acids [i.e., short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and lactic acid] within the rumen. The resulting release of protons can constitute a challenge to the ruminal ecosystem and animal health. Health disturbances, resulting from acidogenic diets, are classified as subacute and acute acidosis based on the degree of ruminal pH depression. Although i...
